Artists in Residency at the Bath House Cultural Center 

Strange Powers Press: Mylan Nguyen and Taro Waggoner 

The Bath House is proud to present, Strange Powers Press as our inaugural artists for the Bath House Cultural Center pilot Artist in Residency program. Strange Powers Press is a letterpress and risograph studio operating out of Dallas. Powered by a Riso GR 3770 and a Vandercook Proof Press, founders Mylan Nguyen and Taro Waggoner make it their mission to promote and publish interesting zines and prints as well as hold workshops on various forms of printmaking and making small publications. 

The risograph is a printing technology defined by its relative simplicity and possibilities for experimentation. Invented in Japan in the 1940s, the technology was imagined as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to photocopy machines. In subsequent decades, Riso has become a definitive creative tool for a global network of users including artists, designers, publishers and universities.   

Reading Room 

The Reading room will offer a small rotating curated selection of risograph zines and prints to inform and inspire participants by exposing them to a variety of artists working in the medium of Riso printing. Open to the public during cultural center open hours. (Tuesday-Saturday, 12:00 – 5:00 PM) 

Workshops 

The workshop series will introduce students to the process and history of Risograph printing. Students will learn the basics of how the machine operates and create their own risograph art art works to take home. We will share some inspiring Riso works as well as techniques and tools we use when creating our own prints, zines, and stationery. All workshops are FREE.
