The Bath House Cultural Center presents Día de Muertos: They’re Having a Party!, an exhibition celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Day of the Dead art tradition at the center.
The Bath House Cultural Center presents its 40th annual Día de Muertos exhibition in 2026, celebrating four decades of bringing this cherished Mexican tradition to Dallas. Since the exhibition was first introduced at the center by Teatro Dallas’ founder, Cora Cardona, it has honored the cultural significance of the celebration through artworks and altars that express love, remembrance, and the enduring bonds between the living and those who have passed away.
Although Día de Muertos celebrations have become increasingly common in recent years, few art spaces in the United States have presented an annual exhibition dedicated to the tradition continuously for as long as the Bath House Cultural Center. To celebrate this milestone, this year’s exhibition transforms the galleries into a grand party in honor of those who are no longer with us.
Central to the Día de Muertos celebration is the belief that, on November 1 and 2, the spirits of the departed return to the world of the living to spend time with their families. They are welcomed with altars prepared in their honor, where offerings of food, drink, and other meaningful objects are placed to delight and nourish them during their annual visit.
But who is to say that their celebration is limited to two days? For this exhibition, curator Enrique Fernández Cervantes invited artists to imagine their departed relatives, friends, and other loved ones celebrating in the afterlife and enjoying the activities, passions, and experiences that brought them joy in life. The resulting works portray the qualities and cheerful moments that made these individuals special: the uncle who never missed a chance to play the guitar, the cousin who loved to dance until dawn, the friend with an unforgettable singing voice, or the parents whose greatest happiness came from preparing a feast for family and friends.
Together, the artworks create a lively celebration in which the honored spirits are imagined enjoying themselves beyond this life. Visitors are invited to enter the galleries and share in the festivities while remembering the people whose lives continue to inspire love, joy, and remembrance.
