The Bath House Cultural Center presents The Eye of the Artist: Interpretations of Nature, an exhibition featuring Penny Wright and Wayne Winn.

Wayne’s artwork explores broad concepts related to nature and humanity’s place within it. He is drawn to the great cycles and themes of the natural world—birth, growth, aging, death, and rebirth—and seeks the beauty that emerges from nature’s often chaotic and explosive processes. At other times, he searches for order and balance. His paintings frequently convey a sense of rhythm and movement within compositions that initially appear still.
A self-taught artist, Wayne originally focused on Western art themes before gradually transitioning toward the more impressionistic and abstract works he creates today. This evolution reflects a shift away from the representational style of his earlier years.

Penny approaches the natural world with a keen appreciation for the intricate details that shape it. Her background in architectural design is reflected in her love of drawing, structure, and careful observation. She strongly connects with architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s famous quote, “God is in the details.” Her trained eye is naturally drawn to details such as the structure of a tree, the veins of a leaf, and the subtle colors and shapes found within shadows.

The artists met through local art clubs and exhibitions and discovered that, despite the differences in their artistic styles, they shared a similar way of observing the world. A few years ago, they began working together in Wayne’s Dallas studio and found that, although they use different media and approaches, their works often engage in a visual dialogue through shared elements such as color, form, line, and composition. Wayne’s abstract paintings have encouraged Penny to loosen her technical approach and embrace a more impressionistic style, while Penny’s attention to detail has influenced Wayne to incorporate greater detail into his recent work.

The theme of nature and the natural environment is deeply important to both collective and individual wellbeing. Stronger connections to nature can foster improved health, a more positive outlook, and a deeper sense of connection to the world around us.

Dallas offers many opportunities for residents to immerse themselves in nature, including White Rock Lake and its surrounding green spaces. An appreciation for the many dimensions of nature helps connect us not only to our environment, but also to one another. This exhibition invites viewers to see nature from new perspectives and to discover beauty in both its grand and subtle forms.
