The Bath House Cultural Center presents Second Surface: Shaping New Futures from Plastic Waste, an exhibition featuring works by Dallas artists Purva Chawla and Steven Kinder.

In today’s fast-paced world, the rapid consumption and disposal of plastic go largely unquestioned. Yet, beyond their fleeting use, these materials—defined by their forms, textures, and hues—retain immense untapped value. This exhibition challenges conventional views on waste, highlighting the inherent beauty, strength, and functional potential of commonly discarded plastics. Through a series of designed artifacts, furniture, and wall-mounted mixed-media artworks, it showcases how abundant waste streams—from soft plastic films to rigid packaging and discarded toys—can be regenerated into refined, purposeful products and experiences.

Dallas-based creatives Steven Kinder and Purva Chawla share a deep interest in the transformation of discarded plastic and other mounting waste streams. With decades of combined experience in design, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and academia, they bring complementary explorations into art and design rooted in reclaimed plastics. Their work bridges aesthetics with environmental responsibility, demonstrating how discarded materials can take on a new life through thoughtful design.

More than a display of polychromatic artworks, this exhibition serves as a call to action—empowering the DFW community to rethink and reimagine the waste streams readily available to them.
