Together, we’ll build the conical lantern’s structure using rattan, taking time to understand the character of these natural materials, their flexibility, strength, and imperfections. As the frame takes shape, you’ll discover your own rhythm, allowing the process to gently guide your ideas into form.

Once the structure is complete, you’ll finish your lantern with colorful glass-like cellophane. Wrapping the lantern is a slow, meditative process that invites patience, care, and attention to detail.

Throughout the afternoon, enjoy a selection of tea, pastries, light snacks, and desserts while making alongside fellow participants.

We’ll conclude the workshop by illuminating each lantern with LED lights, bringing every piece to life.

Participants are warmly invited to exhibit their finished lanterns during the opening of Longing: Light & Sound Interactive Exhibition on August 29, 2026, from 8:00–10:00 PM at the Bath House Cultural Center.

All materials are provided.

This workshop and Longing exhibition are supported in part by the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture.
