Painting the Past: A Folk Art Workshop Inspired by the Artworks of Clementine Hunter

Join us for a special hands-on workshop that accompanies the Almost Free: The Freedman
Town Legacy
exhibition, an artistic tribute to the strength, stories, and spirit of Black
communities in Dallas and beyond.

This class is designed to deepen your connection to the exhibition by exploring the life and legacy of renowned folk artist Clementine Hunter, whose work captured everyday moments of Black life in the rural South with honesty, color, and heart.

đź•° What to Expect:
We’ll begin with a warm welcome and a short overview of the workshop’s goals. Through a brief and powerful presentation, you’ll be introduced to Clementine Hunter’s life, her humble beginnings on Melrose Plantation, her emergence as a self-taught artist, and her unique contribution to American folk art.

You’ll learn how her paintings reflected her lived experience, offering a visual history of Black culture, resilience, and community life. As we explore Hunter’s use of bold colors, simple shapes, and narrative storytelling, you’ll gain insight into the deeper meaning of her work and how it connects to the themes of Almost Free.
